The Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Many of you are in the full swing of midterms right now. This might mean many late and lonely nights at the library for some (ahem, me) with only lots of lots of coffee to keep you company. There are many debates about health-related effects of drinking too much coffee, but I recently read an article in the Huffington Post that argues otherwise.

1. The human body absorbs more antioxidants from coffee than wine and chocolate.
2. Drinking coffee may help prevent certain diseases like parkinson's disease, type II diabetes, and skin cancer (for women).
3. Coffee is great for your liver (especially if you drink alcohol) because it flushes out toxins.
4. Coffee might make you more intelligent since it allows your brain to work more efficiently when you're tired.
5. Even just smelling coffee can make you happier and less stressed.

There is more information (and great gifs) in the article here.

My personal conclusion - anything in moderation is ok. Don't start gulping coffee for fun, and don't cut it out completely - just listen to your body. If you start to feel like you have had too much coffee (racing heart rate, shaky hands, too fidgety) just stop and switch to tea or hot chocolate. I've learned from experience that your body will appreciate anything warm! Good luck with midterms!
